42nd ANNUAL MEMBERS’ SHOW
The 42nd Annual Members’ Show ran from January 13 – March 9, 2024. Presented by the Campbell River Arts Council and the Campbell River Art Gallery, the exhibit is a time-honoured tradition that celebrates many talented artists who live in the Campbell River region and are members of both the Arts Council and the Art Gallery. This is an unjuried exhibition with three People’s Choice Awards generously provided by Patrons of the Arts (POTA). Congratulations to Shea Kotilla, Dawn Piché and Gibson Sell for receiving awards.
BANNER PROJECT
For over 30 years the Arts Council has organized the Annual Banner Project featuring hand painted banners created by local school children, families, organizations and regional artists. The banners are hung throughout the city. Look for them in Willow Point, Pier Street, Shoppers Row, St. Ann’s Road, Spirit Square and The Spit.
Thank you to the BC Arts Council for supporting the Campbell River Arts Council with regular funding, and the City of Campbell River. In 2024 we are partnering with Greenways Land Trust. Thank you to Sherwin-Williams for supplying the paint needed to create these beautiful banners.
WALTER MORGAN STUDIO ARTIST RESIDENCY
In 2020, the Campbell River Arts Council launched an Artist in Residence program in the Walter Morgan Studio – or The Shed, as it has been called over the years. With renovations completed by the City of Campbell River in fall 2019, we wanted to make use of the wonderful studio space.
The aim of The Shed Artist Residency at Walter Morgan Studio is to attract national interest and include public workshops, talks and access to the resident artist.
ART+EARTH INITIATIVE
The ART+EARTH Initiative is a community celebration of experiences where art intersects and connects with nature. Now a year round event, explore the community and enjoy multiple, interactive virtual and in-person events.
ART IN HEALTH
The Campbell River Arts Council is committed to fostering community partnerships within the social, cultural and economic sectors of Campbell River. These partnerships acknowledge that the term community health is wide ranging. The health of each sector is an important contributor to overall community development and community quality of life. Our focus in recent years has been partnerships with social service agencies and healthcare providers, including seniors’ homes, the hospital, hospice, Family Services, John Howard Society and the Head Injury Support Group to name just a few.
Our Art in the Hospital project supports ongoing research and integration of the wide spectrum of arts and culture into the supportive, therapeutic and healing processes within the hospital. This integration is viewed as a key contributor to a positive atmosphere for patients, staff and visitors and includes both InReach (in house) programming as well as OutReach (community based) programs. The overall aim is to have the environment of the hospital be viewed as an extension of the community, reflecting the values of respect, compassion and inclusiveness. The Arts Council promotes the intrinsic value of arts and culture within overall healthcare service delivery and community quality of life.
PUBLIC ART
The Campbell River Arts Council emphasizes the importance of the arts within overall community social, economic and cultural development. We aim to have the arts be highly visible as a valuable community partner and an essential contributor to positive place making within the urban environment.
MUSIC FOR HEALTH
The Arts Council brings live music to our local hospital and to senior citizens in our community. Recognizing the value of music in promoting participation, social inclusion, communication and an overall sense of fun, the Music for Health program is viewed as a valuable aspect of health care delivery. Music’s therapeutic value is recognized internationally as an essential component of providing a healing environment for patients, alongside a positive work environment for staff. The Music for Health program is part of our Art in Health initiative, ongoing since 2006.
50th ANNIVERSARY
In 2020 the Campbell River Arts Council celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was registered as a not-for profit charity on August 31, 1970. Over the past 50 years, the Arts Council has developed its role in the community to evolve into a key organization contributing to Campbell River’s social, cultural and economic development.
The Arts Council currently manages a wide spectrum of community programs. It manages the historic Sybil Andrews Cottage and Walter Morgan Studio on behalf of the City of Campbell River. It has developed partnerships across health, education, environmental and economic sectors.
